How do I read a bra size chart?

Find your underbust in the first chart to get your band. Then go to that band in the second chart and move across to the number closest to your bust. The column heading is your cup.

What is the most common bra size?

There is no reliable worldwide figure. Published surveys tend to cover small groups or a single country, and many people are not wearing the size that fits them, so sales figures do not settle it either.

What does the number in a bra size mean?

It is the band, which is the distance around your ribs under your bust, in inches in the US and UK and in centimetres across most of Europe. Australia and New Zealand use dress-size numbers instead.

What does the letter in a bra size mean?

It is the cup, which shows how many inches your bust measures above your band. It is relative to the band, so a D cup on a 30 band holds much less than a D cup on a 40 band.

Your band comes from your underbust, rounded to the nearest even inch. Your cup comes from how many inches your bust measures above that band: 1 inch is an A, 2 is a B, 3 is a C, 4 is a D and 5 is a DD.

Two things a chart cannot tell you

A chart gives you a size to start from. Brands cut their bands and cups differently, so your size can change between labels. And the same measurement can suit different sizes depending on your shape.

European charts can also read differently. Many European brands size from your actual underbust, which often gives a larger band and a smaller cup than the table above. How the calculator works explains why.
